Let us leave the elementary teachings of Christ and go on to maturity…
—Hebrews 6:1-2
When Jesus gathered with his disciples for the Last Supper, He told them of the coming of the Holy Spirit, which would guide them through challenging times and help them build the Church and spread God’s love. Like those disciples, confirmation candidates are awaiting the fullness of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, so that they too may be His witnesses of our Catholic faith.
Confirmation is only given once. It, like Baptism, imprints on the soul an indelible spiritual mark, the “character,” the sign that Jesus Christ has marked a Christian with the seal of his Spirit by clothing him with the power from on high. Newly confirmed are sealed with the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: Fortitude, Counsel, Piety, Wisdom, Knowledge, Understanding, and Fear of the Lord.
Confirmation is not an ending or graduation from religious education, its a beginning — an opening of one’s self to Christ in your life. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are giving the grace, power, and energy to complete our mission of discipleship by igniting our faith!
